There is a fisherman named Frank living in a rural area. Every night, he goes fishing with a bottle of wine on the river bank. While drinking, he usually spills wine on the ground and prays, “The drowning ghosts in the water, please drink it.” He has cultivated a habit of treating the ghosts. While the others usually go home with nothing, he always can catch a full basket of fish and shrimp.

One day, Frank drinks at the river bank alone as usual. Unknowingly, a young man comes and walks around him. Frank invites the young man to drink with him kindly. The young man agrees happily, without hesitation.

As they are drinking, “I didn’t catch any fish tonight. This is a bad day,” Frank says, with disappointment.

The young man says, “Please allow me to drive the fish downstream for you.” Then he leaves.

After a few minutes, the young man comes back and says, “A large number of fish are coming.”

To his surprise, Frank hears the sound of fish swimming. He pulls the net up quickly and catches several one-foot big fish. “Yahoo!” Frank utters a joyful sound and thanks the young man.

As the young man leaves, Frank gives him a fish as thanks for his help. The young man rejects it and says, “You have treated me many times. My little help isn’t worth much. I will also help you in the future, if you don’t mind.”

Frank says, “I have only treated you once. Why do you say many times? You are so kind to help me, but how can I repay you?”

The young man smiles without a word.

Frank asks his name. The young man says, “You can call me Jack.” Then they part.

Next day, Frank sells some fish and buys more wine. At night, Jack has arrived earlier, and they gladly drink together. After a while, Jack goes into the water to drive the fish for Frank.

It has been six months. One day, Jack tells Frank, “We have been close friends since we met. Sadly, it’s time to part.”

Astonished, Frank asks why.

Jack tries to say several times but in vain.

At last, he says, “I hope you will not be scared. Actually, I am a ghost. I also liked drinking, like you. One day, I got drunk and drowned after falling into this river. I have been a ghost for many years since then. Before you met me, I have helped you on the sly to thank you for sacrificing wine to me. Tomorrow is my rebirth day. Someone will be my substitute, and I will be reborn elsewhere.”

Frank feels scared after hearing his friend’s real identity. But since they have been close, Frank gets used to his ghost friend and feels sad because he will leave. Frank hands a bottle of wine to Jack and says, “Jack, please drink. Although it is sad to say goodbye to you, it is worth celebrating for you to get reborn.” Then they drink together merrily and lively.

“By the way, who is your substitute?”

“You can come here tomorrow. At noon, a woman will drown when she crosses the river, and that person will be my substitute.”

The village cock crows. As the sun is rising, they are reluctant to say goodbye.

The next day, Frank stands by the river to check out this strange occurrence. At noon, there really is a woman crossing the river with her baby. When she walks in the middle of the bridge, she falls into the river suddenly. The baby is thrown on the shore and cries with hands grabbing and feet kicking. The woman struggles in the water, floating and sinking. Finally, she succeeds in climbing on the shore. After resting for a while, she picks up the baby and walks away.

When the woman fell into the water, Frank wanted to save her but when he had thought that she is the substitute for Jack, he gave that up. When the woman climbed ashore from the water by herself, Frank doubts Jack’s words. At night, Frank goes to the old place to fish.

Jack comes again and says, “We won’t be separated any more.”

Frank asks why.

Jack says, “The woman could have replaced me, but I sympathized with the baby in her arms. I could not see two lives die because of me, so I let her go. After that, I do not know when a substitute will appear. Maybe it’s not the time for us to part.”

Frank says with a sigh: “You are kind enough to move God.”

Then they still drink together night after night.

A few days later, God knows that Jack had saved the woman and was touched by him. God appoints him the River God. With such a warm-hearted River God,  nobody drowns in that river ever again, And Frank and Jack always drink and fish together.
