Weightless Wings

I float high in the sky,
Wind hugs my wings as I fly by.
Clouds roll like waves in the blue sea,
I dive! I rise! So wild and free.
I carry maps from long ago,
On wings that gleam with sunset’s glow.
My path shines like a ribbon bright
Across the stars, all through the night.
At dawn, it fades into the ground,
Where silent glaciers spread around.
Like rivers made of ice, cold and deep,
Earth’s blue veins while the world’s asleep.
But leaves won’t stay forever green,
And storm clouds break a sunny scene.
The thunder shouts! The lightning tears!
It shakes my wings with giant fears.
Down I spin, lost and small,
Feathers break, I start to fall.
Still… up I climb, though hurt and slow,
Carrying spring—it helps me go!
I fly to where the light breaks through.
A warm, gold world, fresh and new.
I fold my wings, rest from the fight.
The world feels light! The sky feels bright!
I float high in the air so wide,
Nowhere to hide, nowhere to hide?
Only sky, by my side.
